Leena Gade

Indianapolis Star USA TODAY NETWORK

The first woman to take a lead race engineer job in Verizon IndyCar Series history is coming to work in Indianapolis.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) announced Tuesday that Leena Gade will captain the car driven by James Hinchcliffe. She has engineered
race cars in Formula BMW, Grand Prix, GT racing and has worked for Jaguar Cars, Audi and most recently for Bentley Motorsport.

The Briton holds the distinction as the first female race engineer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and following her second win at the 24-hour race,
Gade was named the FIA World Endurance Championship “Man of the Year” and received the C& R Racing Women in Technology award.

“I’m really honored that I’ve got a chance to come across and work in IndyCar,”

Gade said in a statement. “When I was a kid, I used to watch IndyCar, especially when Nigel Mansell first came over, and I followed it quite a lot.

“During my sports car days, it was a little less so, until I had friends come across to the U.S. to work in it like Piers (Phillips, general manager of SPM).
I’m quite honored to be given the chance. It is going to be something completely different to anything I’ve ever done before, so it’s a big learning curve,
but it’s a challenge that I’m really relishing, so I’m looking forward to it.”

This marks another milestone for women in racing. Ahead of last year’s Indianapolis 500, IndyStar wrote about Cara Adams, who was the only female
engineer in the IndyCar pits when she started with Firestone Racing in 2008. She’s now the chief engineer for Bridgestone Americas Motorsports.

Phillips said he’s excited to welcome Gade.

“I’ve known Leena for quite some time now, and

I’ve worked alongside her, so I knew the credit she’s been given is well deserved,” he said. “We’re very much looking forward to throwing her into the deep
end and seeing her add to the team’s success.”
Some open-wheel news that I found in the IndyStar newspaper ... :) :) :)
